Salik Ansari is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and researcher based out of Mumbai, India who predominantly works around the idea of power, memory, politics of representation, digital spaces and displacement associated with land and water. His research further extends to include socio-technological systems, abandoned objects, disappearances, labour, movements, using a diverse range of mediums like installation, cut-out paintings, objects, sculptures, and videos.
Salik holds a Master of Design in Visual Communication from IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay (2017), and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (2014). He spent a year at Fabrica Communication Research Center in Italy as an artist/designer (2018) and was nominated for the Hublot Design Award in 2017. His recent exhibitions include “No Lines in the Sea” at Fabrica in Venice (2018), “The Rejoinders” at g39 Gallery in Cardiff (2018), and “Distant Mirrors” at Alte Fabrik in Switzerland (2017).
Salik’s work is informed by his training in both visual arts and communication design, allowing him to approach subjects from multiple perspectives. He often uses installation, designed objects, video, drawings, and performance to explore complex ideas. His group exhibitions in recent years include “7th Chapter” and “A Room of One’s Own” at Sakshi Gallery in Mumbai (2023), as well as “This Boat with a Broken Rim” at Mumbai Art Room (2021).
