Chippa Sudhakar is an accomplished artist and educator specializing in printmaking, with a career that spans over 13 years as a lecturer at JNT University, Hyderabad.
His artistic practice revolves around exploring the contrast between mechanical, machine-like forms and organic materials, often depicted through urban cartography and geometric spaces in clay and wood. This juxtaposition reflects the ongoing tension between rapid modernization, technocratization, and the receding presence of nature. By bringing these disparate elements together, Chippa provokes thought and invites viewers to consider the broader implications of urbanization and the changing landscapes it creates.
Rooted in his village upbringing, Chippa witnessed the rapid transformation of urban settlements, with increasing constructions and a notable absence of natural vegetation. This personal experience informs his work, which often addresses the migration of people from rural to urban areas in search of a secure and comfortable life. His work serves as a reminder of the evolving history and memory that accompanies migration, and the changes that come with it.
Chippa Sudhakar completed a Post Diploma in Printmaking from M.S. University of Baroda in 1990 and a Diploma in Fine Arts from JNT University, Hyderabad in 1987. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at esteemed galleries, including Gallery Veda in Chennai, Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, and Apparao Galleries in New Delhi. His work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, such as the Bendre Hussain Award (2002) and honors from the Hyderabad Art Society (1994) and the Bombay Art Society (1993). Chippa has also participated in international printmaking camps and symposiums, including Zee Mays Open Studios in Florence, Massachusetts, and the Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition and Symposium in China.
