Akshata Mokashi (b. 1994) lives and works in Mumbai, India. She is a textile artist whose practice intertwines painted imaginations into tapestries. With a BFA in Textile Design from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, and an MA in Fashion and Textiles from Heriot Watt University, Scotland, Mokashi’s work explores landscapes and nature through the lens of tapestry weaving.
Her practice extends beyond traditional handloom weaving, often incorporating non-classical surfaces that she creates herself, embedding the weaves directly into these surfaces. This process gives her tapestries multiple layers of visuality and meaning. Her compositions are inspired by the forces of nature, juxtaposed with human interventions. Recently, Mokashi has delved into the ecological implications of rivers in urban environments, weaving the flows and waves of water into her works.
Akshata has worked as a designer and researcher at various institutions, including Peepul Tree, Mumbai, Live History India (2021), Journeys in Design, Edinburgh, and Revier Embroidery, Scotland (2019). She has been part of workshops such as Tactile Artworks for MAP, Bangalore, Inclusive Textiles for the visually impaired (UK), Warp and Woof at CSMVS, Mumbai, and Art Village, Karjat. She was part of the Space Studio Residency in Vadodara (2022).
Her artworks have been exhibited at India Art Fair (2024), Art Mumbai (2023), Jehangir Art Gallery, Nehru Center Art Gallery, NESCO, Bajaj Art Gallery, Stranger's House in Mumbai, Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, John Byrne, UK (online exhibit), and Taipei Contemporary Art Center, Taiwan (group exhibition).
